Phase two of the Afraha Stadium redevelopment officially launched on 13th November 2025. This was a critical step in turning the iconic Nakuru venue into an international sports arena ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This second phase focuses on expanding the stadium’s seating capacity from 8,000 to between 13,000 and 15,000. The structural enhancements include building the third and fourth modern pavilions, setting up public sanitation blocks, upgrading parking zones, installing high-mast floodlights, and creating two new perimeter access roads.
The primary key players steering this project are Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika and the national government through Cabinet Secretary for Defence Soipan Tuya. To ensure rapid, high-quality completion and transparency, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are actively executing the project on-site. They work closely with inter-agency bodies, including the State Department for Internal Security, and local utilities like the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (NAWASSCO).

Objectives

1. Expand Seating Capacity: Elevate total capacity from 8,000 up to 13,000–15,000 spectators to handle larger crowds comfortably.
2. Meet International Standards: Upgrade foundational systems, including electrical, mechanical, and safety features, to secure certification from global bodies like CAF and FIFA.
3. Enhance Logistics and Accessibility: Develop specialized parking zones and build two new dedicated access roads to optimize traffic flow during major match days.
4. Improve Public Amenities: Construct state-of-the-art VIP pavilions and add modern sanitation blocks to support basic hygiene and spectator comfort.
5. Drive Sports Tourism: Establish Nakuru County as a premium destination for national and international tournaments, explicitly aligning with Kenya's hosting preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
6. Empower Local Talent: Provide youth and professional athletes with high-tier training tracks and fields to nurture sporting excellence.
7. Stimulate the Economy: Boost local commercial growth, create immediate construction jobs for residents, and incentivize commercial investment outside the central business district.
