Phase two of the Afraha Stadium redevelopment officially launched on 13th November 2025. This was a critical step in turning the iconic Nakuru venue into an international sports arena ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This second phase focuses on expanding the stadium’s seating capacity from 8,000 to between 13,000 and 15,000. The structural enhancements include building the third and fourth modern pavilions, setting up public sanitation blocks, upgrading parking zones, installing high-mast floodlights, and creating two new perimeter access roads.
The primary key players steering this project are Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika and the national government through Cabinet Secretary for Defence Soipan Tuya. To ensure rapid, high-quality completion and transparency, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are actively executing the project on-site. They work closely with inter-agency bodies, including the State Department for Internal Security, and local utilities like the Nakuru Water and Sanitation Services Company (NAWASSCO).
The Soimet Bridge is a road bridge in Nakuru Town West Sub-County, Nakuru County, Kenya. It spans River Ndarugu, connecting Kaptembwo Ward with Barut and Kapkures wards. Constructed by the County Government of Nakuru, the bridge replaced a hazardous crossing and now provides a safe, reliable, all-weather route for residents, businesses, farmers, students, and visitors.
Background
For many years, residents crossing River Ndarugu relied on an unsafe crossing that became difficult or impossible to use during heavy rains. This disrupted access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets, and other essential services while limiting trade between neighbouring communities.
Recognising the need for a permanent solution, Governor Susan Kihika committed to constructing a modern bridge during a development tour of Barut Ward. The project officially commenced after the site was handed over to the contractor on 13 March 2026.
Construction
Construction progressed steadily throughout 2026, reaching approximately 70% completion by mid-year before being officially completed on 14 July 2026. Completion was announced by Chief Officer Ken Mungai.
County engineers supervised the implementation alongside other county officials to ensure the bridge met the required engineering and safety standards.

The completion of Soimet Bridge has significantly improved mobility between Kaptembwo, Barut and Kapkures wards by:
