On this day in 2021, the transformation of Nakuru’s iconic Afraha Stadium officially began. A ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of a Sh650 million first phase, funded through the World Bank’s Kenya Urban Support Programme. Originally an 8,200-seat arena, the stadium was envisioned as a world-class facility featuring an Olympic-standard tartan track and a modern football pitch.
The initiative was launched with high expectations, promising a modern sports facility to boost local talent and urban development. It formed part of a broader list of infrastructure projects pledged during Governor Lee Kinyanjui’s tenure. However, like several other promised developments, progress stalled, and completion timelines were not met, leaving residents questioning delivery and the long-term impact of such ambitious but unfinished commitments.
