On this day in 1931, Lord Delamere, the primary architect of white settlement in Kenya, died at 61. While his death occurred in Nairobi, his heart and legacy remained rooted in the dust of the Nakuru region.
From his vast Soysambu estate overlooking Lake Elmenteita, Delamere transformed the Rift Valley into an agricultural powerhouse, pioneering the wheat and dairy industries that still define Nakuru’s economy. To many, he was the visionary “father of Kenya Colony”; to others, a symbol of Maasai dispossession. He was laid to rest at Soysambu, forever linking his name to the Nakuru landscape.
