Gicinga Telling Nakuru's Story

Fred Kubai dies in 1996

"I would rather die a poor man with honor than a rich man with shame," Fred Kubai, MP Nakuru East.

Profile

On this day in 1996, Kenya lost a towering figure of the independence struggle, Fred Kubai. A fearless trade unionist and a member of the legendary Kapenguria Six, Kubai was instrumental in the fight against colonial rule alongside Jomo Kenyatta.
Following independence, he served two terms as the Member of Parliament for Nakuru East, a vast constituency that then included Naivasha and Gilgil. Fittingly, he passed away on Madaraka Day, the very holiday celebrating Kenya’s self-rule. Today, we honour his legacy of bravery and his decades of service to the people of Nakuru and the nation.
