On 19 April 1926, Hans Zwager was born in Heerlen, the Netherlands. Although little could have foretold it at the time, Zwager would go on to play a pivotal role in transforming Kenya’s horticultural industry and the economy of the Lake Naivasha region.
Together with his wife, June Zwager, he founded Oserian Development Company and became a pioneer of commercial flower farming in Kenya. Through his vision and entrepreneurship, Kenyan flowers gained access to European markets, helping establish the country as one of the world’s leading exporters of cut flowers.
Beyond horticulture, Zwager invested in geothermal energy, conservation, ecotourism, education, healthcare, and community development, particularly around Lake Naivasha. His contributions earned him both Kenyan and Dutch national honours, including the Order of the Moran of the Burning Spear (1998) and the Dutch Order of Orange-Nassau (2011).
Today, Hans Zwager is remembered as one of the individuals whose work helped shape modern Naivasha and position Kenya as a global leader in floriculture.
