On 13 June 2026, Nakuru County Governor Susan Kihika officially launched the inaugural Nakuru County Governor’s Cup at Afraha Stadium, introducing what became one of the largest grassroots football competitions ever organised in the county. The tournament was established to promote youth empowerment, identify football talent, and strengthen community participation in sport across Nakuru’s eleven sub-counties.
Organised by the Nakuru County Government in partnership with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), the competition brought together men’s and women’s teams from every sub-county. It adopted a structured format beginning with ward-level matches, progressing to sub-county championships, and culminating in county finals, providing young players with an opportunity to compete at increasingly higher levels.
Tournament regulations reflected the organisers’ emphasis on youth development. Each team comprised 30 members, including 27 players and three officials. To encourage the participation of young footballers, every squad was required to include at least seven players under the age of 18, while adult players were required to be registered voters within Nakuru County.
The official launch attracted more than 3,000 spectators to Afraha Stadium and featured exhibition matches showcasing local talent. In the men’s fixture, Kivumbini FC defeated Kibara FC 2–1, while Ogilgei Grannies FC won the women’s match after defeating Wakulima FC in a penalty shootout following a draw in normal time.
The tournament also introduced substantial financial incentives. Cash prizes were offered at various stages of the competition, with both the men’s and women’s county champions set to receive KSh1 million. Beyond the prize money, organisers envisioned the Governor’s Cup as a platform for identifying talented players who could progress to professional clubs and higher levels of competition.
The launch represented a renewed commitment by the county government to invest in grassroots sports as a tool for youth development, social inclusion, and community cohesion. By creating opportunities for competition across all eleven sub-counties, the Governor’s Cup sought to strengthen football while fostering positive engagement among young people.
As the inaugural edition of the tournament, the 13 June 2026 launch marked an important milestone in Nakuru County’s sporting history. It established a countywide football competition designed not only to crown champions but also to nurture future talent and promote sport as an avenue for personal development and community unity.
