A political earthquake shook Nakuru as the FORD movement held a massive rally at Afraha Stadium, just forty-eight hours before Kenya’s historic first multiparty elections. Thousands braved a tense atmosphere to demand change, marking a defiant stand in a KANU stronghold.

Led locally by John Maina Kamangara for Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, the “FORD wave” appeared unstoppable. However, the movement’s earlier split into FORD-Kenya and FORD-Asili loomed large. While the Afraha crowd signalled a hunger for democracy, the divided opposition ultimately paved the way for President Moi’s re-election two days later.
