On this day, we honour the legacy of John Maina Kamangara, the fearless politician and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga’s key pointman in Nakuru. In December 1992, Kamangara orchestrated the mammoth FORD rally at Afraha Stadium, a sea of humanity that signalled the dawn of multipartyism. Known for his uncompromising defiance, he electrified the crowd by boldly inciting supporters to march toward the Statehouse in Nakuru, challenging the era’s political boundaries. He died in 2001, aged 51 and was laid to rest at Nakuru North Cemetery on 11th September 2001. Kamangara remains a symbol of the “second liberation” and the man who turned Nakuru into an opposition heartbeat.
