On this day, we honour the birth of Kinuthia Mbugua, the pioneer Governor who laid the foundational stones for Nakuru County’s devolved governance. Born in Kiambu but deeply rooted in Nakuru’s progress, Mbugua transitioned from a disciplined career as the Administration Police Commandant to become a central figure in local history. His tenure (2013–2017) was defined by the transition from a municipal council to a fully-fledged county government.
Following his one-term governorship, Kinuthia Mbugua made a significant return to the national stage after being prevailed upon by President Uhuru Kenyatta to withdraw his independent re-election bid in 2017. In January 2018, he was officially appointed as the State House Comptroller, succeeding Lawrence Lenayapa. In this influential role, Mbugua was responsible for managing the President’s diary, overseeing the administration of State House, and handling the Head of State’s private and official functions.
