On April 10, 2006, Nakuru lost one of its most courageous voices, Mirugi Kariuki. The then-MP for Nakuru Town and Assistant Minister perished in the tragic Marsabit plane crash while on a noble mission to broker peace in Northern Kenya.
A fierce human rights lawyer and democracy champion, Mirugi’s legacy remains woven into the fabric of our city. From his days as a political prisoner to his leadership in Parliament, he fought for justice and the marginalised. Today, we remember a leader who literally gave his life for the cause of peace.
